Hawaiʻi Army National Guard Commander Promoted to Brigadier General

Col. Ronald D. “Damon” Hogsten, commander of the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard and director of the Hawaiʻi National Guard Joint Staff, was promoted to brigadier general during a ceremony Sept. 3, 2026, at the 298th Multi-Functional Training Regiment, Regional Training Institute, in Waimānalo, Hawaiʻi.

Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green presided over the ceremony and pinned the general officer insignia on Hogsten, while Maj. Gen. Stephen F. Logan, the adjutant general of the State of Hawaiʻi, administered the oath of office. Family members, fellow service members, military leaders and distinguished guests gathered to recognize the milestone in Hogsten’s military career.

Green praised Hogsten’s commitment to Hawaiʻi’s communities, highlighting his presence during recent natural disasters and his attention to the people affected by them.

“That's the hallmark of a leader,” Green said. “His instinct was to be there for them. His instinct was to not just lead us as a body and to represent the National Guard, but to be present.”

Reflecting on Hogsten’s leadership through the state’s recent disaster-response operations Green said, “There's never a complaint. It's simply a commitment. A commitment to keeping people safe, to protecting them, to respecting them.”
Hogsten’s promotion comes after nearly three decades of military service, including active-duty assignments, overseas deployments, leadership positions within the Army National Guard and support to emergency-response missions.

A native of Orange County, Va., Hogsten enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1997 after graduating from Bridgewater College. He commissioned as a military police officer in 2000 through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., and served eight years on active duty before transitioning to the Army National Guard.

His experience includes service in Central America, where he supported humanitarian assistance projects and security missions, and a deployment to Afghanistan where he helped synchronize military police forces across the theater, including support for Afghanistan’s first national presidential election.

Throughout his career, Hogsten has also supported domestic response missions, including the 2012 Virginia winter storm and Hurricane Sandy. In Hawaiʻi, he served as Joint Task Force Commander during the 2026 Kona Low storm response supporting county partners during subsequent recovery missions.

Hogsten previously commanded the 298th Multi-Functional Training Regiment, the site of his promotion ceremony. He credited his time at the Regional Training Institute with helping shape his development as a leader.

“I grew as a person and a leader here at the RTI,” Hogsten said.

The promotion represents the confidence placed in him by the Army, the State of Hawaiʻi and the nation, and reaffirmed his commitment to the Hawaiʻi National Guard’s mission.

“I do not view this promotion as a personal reward for past accomplishments,” Hogsten said. “I accept it as a solemn charge, a charge to carry greater responsibility, to make future sacrifices, and to earn the trust placed in me every single day.”

Hogsten highlighted his family’s support throughout his military career, recognizing his wife, Jamie, and their children, Nathaniel and Lilianne, for the sacrifices they have made during years of deployments, relocations and time apart.

“This promotion does not belong to me,” Hogsten said. “It reflects your strength, your patience, your sacrifice, and your unwavering love. I stand here today because you have stood beside me every chapter along the way.”
